Washington DC Civic Engagement Study Tour
The FOCUS Initiative (for faculty)
The American Democracy Project (ADP) is a multi-campus initiative that seeks to create an intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement for undergraduates enrolled at institutions that are members of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The ADP is about fostering intellectual and experiential understanding of civic engagement in undergraduates, as well as fostering a commitment on the part of graduating students to engage in meaningful actions as citizens in a democracy.
The American Democracy Project at Illinois State is a cooperative effort by students, faculty, staff, and administration. The goal of the Project is to promote civic engagement, in many different forms, on the part of undergraduates, now and in the future. The Project embraces all organized activity designed to promote constructive civic engagement on the part of undergraduates while they are on campus, and after they graduate.
Building on the wide variety of such activity already occurring at Illinois State, the Project is designed to serve as a catalyst for programmatic changes that will ensure all Illinois State undergraduates are fully prepared to assume a responsible role as contributors to civic society.
As a result of the Project, faculty may decide to incorporate new elements of civic engagement in certain courses, or there may be new initiatives taken on by student organizations. Also, the University may determine new ways to project itself to prospective and current students. The Project remains open to the ideas and energy of all campus constituencies.
